Ignorance Editorial

It takes ignorance to have prejudices towards a certain group of  people and many people in the American population are ignorant when it comes to discrimination. Many people do not take discrimination seriously because of their ignorance, and this is causing the problem to become worse. An example of this is discrimination interfering with employment. Some bosses and managers fire their employees because of their Hispanic ethnicity. According to a nationwide survey by Careerbuilder.com, "12 percent of Hispanic workers said they believed they had been fired at some point in their career based on their diverse background" (Grasz 1). Due to their ethnicity, Hispanic workers were fired, and the workers in that 12 percent became unemployed because of their employer's ignorance.  This ignorance can be compared to Oedipus' ignorance in the tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. In the story, Oedipus' ignorance keeps him from seeing the truth, that he had fulfilled a prophecy that he didn't want to. When it comes to discriminating against a group of people, the concept is the same. A person's ignorance prevents them from seeing the truth that they are really equals, and in the case of hiring, the employers fired their Hispanic workers because their own ignorance prevented them from seeing the truth.
